Aeroflot — Post-Sanctions Operations

Since February 2022, Aeroflot has operated as a sanctioned carrier unable to access EU, UK, US, Canadian, or Allied airspace. Its network has contracted toward domestic Russia, friendly Asian destinations, and selected Middle East / North Africa services. Fleet maintenance without Western OEM support and insurance without Western reinsurance markets have driven a parallel set of operational challenges.

Network Contraction

Pre-2022, Aeroflot served a global long-haul network with emphasis on Europe. Post-sanctions, services to Europe and North America were suspended. The remaining international network focuses on Turkey (IST), UAE (DXB, AUH), Egypt (CAI), India (DEL, BOM), Iran (IKA), Central Asia, and Chinese destinations.

Domestic network has been expanded to absorb displaced international capacity.

Fleet and MRO

Without OEM support from Boeing and Airbus, the fleet operates under domestic MRO arrangements. Parts supply has relied on cannibalisation of some aircraft and on grey-market sources. Long-term airworthiness is a documented concern. Russian Superjet and MC-21 domestic programmes have faced delays in substituting for Western fleet capacity.

See also the Russian lessor dispute — many of the aircraft in current Aeroflot service are subject to unresolved ownership and insurance disputes.
