Honduras Airspace
Current Status
The Tegucigalpa FIR (MHTG) manages Honduran airspace within the Central American isthmus. The FIR handles transit traffic between North and South America along the Central American corridor. Ramon Villeda Morales International Airport (MHLM) in San Pedro Sula is the busiest commercial airport, while Toncontin Airport (MHTG) in Tegucigalpa is known for its challenging terrain-surrounded approach.
Radar coverage is concentrated around the San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa terminal areas. Southern and eastern sectors of the FIR have limited or no radar surveillance, relying on procedural control. The Honduran civil aviation authority (AHAC) maintains COCESNA (Central American Air Navigation Services Corporation) coordination for regional ATC management, which provides harmonized procedures across the Central American FIRs.
Honduras faces no conflict-related airspace concerns. The primary operational challenges are terrain-related, particularly at Tegucigalpa where the airport sits in a valley at 1,005 meters elevation surrounded by mountains. The Roatan Island airport (MHRO) serves as an additional international entry point for tourism traffic. Drug trafficking flights in remote areas are a background law enforcement concern but do not affect commercial aviation operations.
Key Risks
Tegucigalpa approach is among the most challenging in the Americas, requiring special crew qualification. Mountains surround multiple Honduran airports.
Southern and eastern FIR sectors lack radar surveillance. Procedural control with larger separation standards applies outside terminal areas.
Caribbean coast is exposed to Atlantic hurricanes (June-November), which can force extended airport closures and affect ATC infrastructure.
Controller staffing levels are stretched during peak traffic periods, particularly for overnight and weekend coverage at regional facilities.
Recent Events
Palmerola International Airport (XPL), which replaced Tegucigalpa Toncontin in 2024, continued expanding its international route network.
COCESNA completed ATC coordination upgrade for Central American upper airspace transit routes through the MHTG FIR.
Roatan airport set new passenger records during winter tourist season, increasing ATC demand in the Caribbean coastal sector.
EASA & FAA Guidance
No EASA or FAA restrictions on Honduran airspace. The FAA rates Honduras as IASA Category 1, meaning its aviation authority meets ICAO standards. US carriers operate regular scheduled service to San Pedro Sula and Roatan. EASA has no specific advisories. Special crew qualification is required for the former Tegucigalpa Toncontin approach; Palmerola International has a standard-category approach available.
