Current Status

The Emirates FIR (OMAE) is normally fully operational and hosts some of the world's busiest airports, including Dubai International (DXB) and Abu Dhabi (OMAA). However, the UAE's proximity to active conflict zones means precautionary closures can occur with little notice during regional escalations.

The February 2026 Gulf cascade event demonstrated UAE's vulnerability: when 12 FIRs shut down simultaneously during a regional crisis, DXB — the world's busiest international airport — was forced to halt operations for several hours. The economic impact was enormous given the volume of transit traffic through UAE airports.

Drone incidents at DXB have also been a growing concern, with unauthorized drone sightings causing temporary runway closures and flight disruptions. UAE authorities have implemented counter-drone systems, but the threat remains a factor for operations at the country's major airports.

Key Risks

Gulf cascade closure

Regional escalations trigger multi-FIR closures that include UAE airspace, disrupting the world's busiest transit hub.

Drone incidents at DXB

Unauthorized drone sightings near Dubai airport cause temporary runway closures and departure/arrival delays.

non-state regional actor operational events range

UAE is within range of non-state regional actor regional military systems, as demonstrated by the January 2022 incidents in Abu Dhabi.

Diversion capacity

When UAE airspace closes, the volume of diverted traffic overwhelms alternative airports in Oman and Bahrain.

Recent Events

Mar 26

DXB experienced a 45-minute runway closure due to unauthorized drone sighting near approach path.

Feb 26

Gulf 12-FIR cascade closure included OMAE, halting DXB operations for several hours during regional escalation.

Jan 26

UAE deployed additional counter-drone systems at DXB and OMAA following increase in unauthorized drone activity.

Jan 22

non-state regional actor drone and missile incidents in Abu Dhabi marked the first direct conflict impact on UAE aviation infrastructure.

EASA & FAA Guidance

Neither EASA nor the FAA currently restrict operations in UAE airspace during normal conditions. However, both agencies issue rapid NOTAMs during regional escalations. Airlines are advised to maintain contingency plans for sudden UAE airspace closures, particularly given the volume of transit traffic through DXB and OMAA.
