Why Are Flights Still Going Over Iran?
Iranian airspace (OIIX) is under EASA advisory but not universally banned. Here is how the layered restrictions work and which carriers still use the corridor.
Are flights still going over Iran in 2026?
Yes, but on a reduced and risk-assessed basis. EASA CZIB and FAA advisories restrict operations in specific altitudes and regions of Iranian airspace (OIIX). Operators that continue flying OIIX have conducted risk assessment and fly on approved corridors at approved altitudes. Many Western airlines reroute around Iran entirely.
Why does any airline still fly over Iran?
Iranian airspace sits between Europe and South/East Asia. Avoiding it adds substantial block time. Carriers who have retained permissions (notably many Gulf and Indian carriers, and some European operators on specific altitudes) balance risk, regulation, and cost; they continue operation where their risk assessment supports it.
Is it safe?
Safety is operator risk-assessed under applicable regulations. Operators continuing to fly OIIX have determined it meets their regulatory and internal safety requirements. EASA CZIB is an advisory, not a ban.
Do US carriers fly over Iran?
US civil operations in Iranian airspace have been restricted by FAA for many years. Recent updates have tightened these restrictions. US carriers do not use OIIX for scheduled passenger operations.
