Lithuania Airspace
Current Status
Lithuanian airspace within the EYVL Vilnius FIR remains fully open to civil aviation, with standard ATC services provided by Oro Navigacija. However, the country's unique geographic position — bordered by the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad to the west and Belarus to the east — creates a persistent electronic warfare environment that affects navigation reliability across the entire FIR.
GPS jamming originating from Kaliningrad has been a continuous feature of Lithuanian airspace since 2022, with significant intensification through 2024-2026. Lithuania receives some of the strongest GPS interference in the Baltic region due to its direct proximity to the Kaliningrad exclave. The jamming affects not only en-route navigation but also approach procedures at Vilnius, Kaunas, and Palanga airports, all of which have implemented enhanced ILS contingency procedures.
The Suwalki Gap — the narrow land corridor between Kaliningrad and Belarus that connects Lithuania and Poland to the rest of NATO — adds a layer of strategic sensitivity to Lithuanian airspace. Military exercises and NATO air policing missions from Siauliai Air Base generate regular NOTAMs that affect routing through the FIR, particularly in the western sectors. While these do not typically restrict commercial aviation, they require awareness during flight planning.
Key Risks
Lithuania experiences among the highest GPS jamming levels in Europe due to direct proximity to Russian electronic warfare systems in Kaliningrad. RNAV approaches are frequently degraded or unavailable.
The 100-km corridor between Kaliningrad and Belarus is NATO's most strategically sensitive chokepoint in Europe. Any escalation in regional tensions would directly affect Lithuanian airspace operations.
NATO air policing operations from Siauliai and periodic large-scale exercises (Baltic Air Policing, Tobruq Legacy) create temporary restricted areas that can affect civil routing.
Beyond jamming, GPS spoofing events have been reported over Lithuanian territory, causing aircraft to display incorrect positions — a more dangerous variant of electronic interference.
Recent Events
GPS jamming over western Lithuania intensified during Russian military exercises near Kaliningrad, affecting Palanga airport approaches for 72 hours.
Lithuania upgraded Vilnius and Kaunas airports with enhanced ILS equipment to reduce dependence on GPS-based approaches.
NATO expanded Baltic Air Policing mission with additional fighter deployments to Siauliai, generating increased military NOTAMs.
EUROCONTROL reported Lithuania among the top three European states affected by GPS interference by flight count.
EASA & FAA Guidance
EASA has issued Safety Information Bulletins covering GPS jamming in the Baltic region, advising operators to ensure ILS capability at Lithuanian airports and to maintain conventional navigation contingency procedures. Operators are reminded that GNSS should not be the sole means of navigation when operating in the EYVL FIR. The FAA has published advisory notices for US operators transiting Lithuanian airspace, recommending verification of alternative navigation availability. Neither authority restricts operations, but enhanced crew awareness and ILS readiness are strongly recommended.
