Myanmar Airspace
Current Status
The Yangon FIR (VYYY) operates under constrained conditions due to the ongoing civil conflict that began after the February 2021 military takeover. Armed resistance groups control significant portions of the country's territory, and military air operations — including cross-border aerial action — are conducted regularly across multiple regions.
ATC services remain functional along primary international corridors but with reduced capacity. Staff shortages, aging equipment, and limited access to replacement parts have degraded service quality. The Yangon FIR is a key transit corridor for flights between South Asia and Southeast Asia, with overflights connecting India/Bangladesh to Thailand and beyond.
International carriers have largely maintained overfly operations through upper airspace, but several airlines have ceased direct services to Myanmar destinations. Domestic airports outside Yangon and Mandalay operate with minimal safety oversight.
Key Risks
Military cross-border aerial action are conducted across the country, creating potential hazards at lower flight levels and near domestic airports.
Staff shortages and aging equipment reduce ATC reliability, particularly outside the main Yangon-Mandalay corridor.
Resistance forces have acquired portable air defense systems, creating risk at lower altitudes near conflict zones.
HF and VHF communications coverage has gaps in remote areas, complicating coordination for overflying aircraft.
Recent Events
Resistance forces reported use of anti-aircraft systems against military helicopters in Sagaing region, raising concerns about overfly safety at lower levels.
ICAO expressed concern about Myanmar ATC staffing levels and requested a remediation plan from authorities.
Multiple international carriers announced suspension of direct services to Yangon, citing insurance and safety concerns.
Military cross-border aerial action near Mandalay airport caused temporary closure and diversion of international overflights.
EASA & FAA Guidance
EASA has issued a Safety Information Bulletin advising operators to exercise caution in Myanmar airspace, particularly below FL260. The FAA has issued advisory guidance for US operators regarding the security situation. Neither authority has imposed a blanket prohibition, but operators are advised to maintain enhanced monitoring of NOTAMs and evaluate the risk for each flight individually.
