Is it safe to fly to Tokyo?
HND / NRT · RJTT / RJAA · Japan FIR (RJJJ) · Last updated: May 2026
Yes. Tokyo's two main airports — Haneda (RJTT / HND) and Narita (RJAA / NRT) — operate routinely. Japan FIR (RJJJ) shows low GPS interference, no active EASA CZIB, and minimal NOTAM volume. The contextual note: Europe-Tokyo routes were substantially restructured following the February 2022 Russia overflight ban, with most non-Russian European carriers now routing via Central Asia or Polar paths. This added ~2–3 hours to direct flight times. Tokyo from North America (transpacific) is largely unaffected. Hub experience remains among the smoothest globally.
Routes & FIRs crossed
Pre-2022 Europe-Tokyo direct flights via Russia took ~9.5 hours. Post-ban routes via Central Asia or Polar add ~2–3 hours. Transpacific routes from North America are largely unaffected.
| Route | Time | Typical FIRs crossed |
|---|---|---|
| LHR → HND (LH/AF/KL via CA) | ~13h | EGTT · LFFF · LIBB · LTAA · UDDD · UTAA · ZBPE · ZSHA · RJJJ |
| LHR → HND (BA via Polar) | ~14h | EGTT · BIRD · CZQM · CZEG · PAZA · RJJJ Polar-adjacent routing |
| LAX → HND | ~11.5h | North Pacific · KZAK · RJJJ |
| SIN → HND | ~7h | WSJC · WMFC · VHHK · RCAA · RJJJ |
Current airspace status
- ✓Hub RJJJ (Japan FIR): Routine operations across all major airports. Japan detail →
- !Russian airspace (UEEE, ULLL): Closed to European carriers since Feb 2022. North American carriers transit normally for transpolar routes.
- !Korean Peninsula adjacent: Periodic restricted areas affect routing in Sea of Japan; civil aviation continues.
- !Polar routes (2026 solar maximum): Solar storms can prompt rerouting and altitude changes for transpolar flights. Routine operational consideration.
Recent observations
- SUSTAINED 2022–2026Europe-Tokyo route economics restructured
Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, BA, and Finnair all repositioned Tokyo routes. Most use Central Asia corridor (over Caucasus, Caspian, Mongolia/China). British Airways uses polar-adjacent routing. ~2-3 hour block time increase has changed crew rotation, fuel economics, fare structure. Tokyo network reduced compared to peak.
European carriers analysis → - 2026 SOLAR MAXIMUMPolar route solar event handling
2026 is solar cycle 25 maximum, increasing frequency of geomagnetic storms affecting polar HF radio and GNSS. Carriers using polar routes monitor NOAA SWPC alerts; standard mitigations include altitude changes and equator-side reroute. No safety incidents from solar events in modern era; the consideration is operational tempo.

Airlines flying to Tokyo
What to know before booking
- Hub experience. Both HND and NRT operate smoothly. HND is closer to central Tokyo; NRT historically the international gateway.
- Direct vs Gulf-stopover from Europe. Direct Europe-Tokyo is now 13-14h. Gulf stopover (DXB/DOH) total 14-16h but split into two flights.
- Polar route considerations. If your airline routes via Polar (BA, some United), solar-event reroutes may add unscheduled time. Rare. Not a safety concern.
- Travel insurance: standard coverage applies. Japan is not on any "war risk" list.
When to be concerned
- !Korean peninsula or Taiwan contingency. Hypothetical regional escalation could affect routing. Civil aviation contingency exists.
- !Major solar event during your flight. For polar-routed flights only. Carrier handles mitigation.
How we measure
Continuous synthesis from public NOTAMs, EASA Conflict Zone Information Bulletins, NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, ADS-B telemetry, and aviation industry advisories.
