Hamad International opened in 2014 and serves as Qatar Airways' super-connector hub. The airport handled record passenger volumes during and after the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has continued expansion. Qatar Airways operates globally; DOH's position enables near-symmetric east-west routings across Eurasia.

The June 2017 – January 2021 Gulf diplomatic blockade forced Qatar Airways to reroute around Saudi, UAE, Bahrain, and Egyptian airspace, using Iranian and Omani corridors. Operations continued throughout; the blockade experience has informed the carrier's contingency planning for subsequent regional events.
